SASSA Offices Banking Details Contact SASSA Check Status →SASSA found an active or recent UIF claim or registration linked to your ID number. You cannot receive both UIF unemployment benefits and the SASSA SRD grant in the same month. Here's what to do.
The Department of Employment and Labour's UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) database shows that your ID is registered as actively claiming UIF benefits, or that a recent UIF payment was made to you during the assessment month. SASSA's system treats active UIF payments as an income source - meaning you do not qualify for the SRD R370 at the same time.
SASSA and the Department of Labour now share data monthly. If your UIF claim is active - even if you haven't received a specific payment that month - SASSA may still show this decline. Common situations that trigger it: you're currently claiming unemployment UIF, you recently had a UIF payment for that month, your UIF claim is open but payments are delayed, your employer registered you with UIF but you never claimed (this sometimes causes issues), or a past UIF claim was closed but the database hasn't updated.
Log in or call *134*843# (no data needed) to see if you have an active UIF claim and whether a payment was made for the month in question.
If you finished claiming UIF, make sure your claim is properly closed in the uFiling system. Speak to the Department of Labour on 0800 030 007 if you need help closing it.
If you are still actively receiving UIF, you do not qualify for SRD during those months. Once UIF ends, you can check your SASSA status - the next monthly cycle should automatically reassess you.
If you believe you never claimed UIF or your claim was closed long ago, appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za within 90 days. Include a reference number or written confirmation from the Department of Labour that no active UIF claim exists for your ID.
If you qualify for both, you must choose one. UIF typically pays more than SRD R370 (based on the sliding-scale benefit), so for most people UIF is the better option while it lasts - then switch to SRD after.
There's a distinction here that costs people months of grant money: being registered for UIF is not the same as receiving UIF. Almost anyone who has ever been formally employed is registered. That alone shouldn't decline you. What triggers this code is a UIF benefit payment showing against your ID for that month.
Where it goes wrong is the lag. UIF payments stop, but the Department of Labour's records take a month or two to reflect that, and SASSA is reading those records. So you get declined for months when you genuinely received nothing.
The fix that actually works is getting a payment history printout from uFiling or a labour centre showing your last payment date. Then appeal each affected month and reference that date. Vague appeals fail here; a specific "my last UIF payment was on this date, I am appealing the months after it" tends to succeed.
