Apply within 6 months of losing your job
UIF claims must be submitted within 6 months of your last working day. After 6 months, your claim will lapse and you lose those benefits. Don't delay โ€” apply as soon as you're unemployed.

๐Ÿ“‹ Documents You'll Need

๐Ÿชช
SA ID document
Green ID book or smart ID card. A certified copy is acceptable for online but bring the original to a Labour Centre.
๐Ÿ“„
UI-2.1 Form (Employer Declaration)
Your employer must complete and sign this form confirming your employment details and reason for leaving. Get it from your employer or download at labour.gov.za.
๐Ÿฆ
UI-2.8 Form (Bank Details)
Your bank account details โ€” account number, bank name, branch code. Must be stamped by your bank or confirmed on official letterhead.
๐Ÿ’ต
Last payslip or salary confirmation
Your most recent payslip showing your gross monthly salary. Used to calculate your benefit amount.
๐Ÿ“ง
Proof of registration / UIF number
Your UIF registration number if you have it. Otherwise your ID number is used to look you up in the UIF system.
๐Ÿ“
UI-19 Form (Notice of Termination)
Also completed by employer. Confirms your termination date and reason. Often provided alongside your letter of retrenchment.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ How to Apply โ€” Choose Your Method

๐ŸŒ Online (uFiling)
๐Ÿข Labour Centre
๐Ÿ“ฎ Post Office
1

Register on uFiling

Go to ufiling.labour.gov.za and click Register. Use your 13-digit ID number and an email address. You'll receive a confirmation email โ€” click the link to activate your account.

โœ… If you're already registered, just log in. Your employer may have registered your UIF contributions for you.
2

Go to Apply for Benefits โ†’ Unemployment

After logging in, click Apply for Benefits from the left menu, then select Unemployment Benefits. You'll be asked to confirm your personal details match your ID.

3

Complete your employment information

Fill in your employer's details, your last working date, your reason for leaving (retrenchment / dismissal / contract ended), and your last salary. This information must match your UI-2.1 form.

4

Upload your documents

Upload scanned copies or clear photos of: your ID, UI-2.1 form (signed by employer), UI-2.8 bank form (stamped by bank), and your last payslip. Make sure all documents are readable.

โš ๏ธ Blurry or incomplete documents are the #1 reason for claim delays. Use good lighting and check all four edges of each document are visible.
5

Submit and note your reference number

Review your application, then click Submit. You will receive a claim reference number โ€” write this down or screenshot it. You'll need it to track your claim.

6

Track your claim and sign for continuation

Log in to uFiling to track your claim status. Once approved, you must sign a continuation form every 4 weeks to continue receiving payments. This can also be done online. Missing a signature stops your payments.

โœ… Set a reminder every 4 weeks to sign your continuation form. Missing it is the most common reason payments stop.
Visit your nearest Department of Employment and Labour office (Labour Centre). Open Mondayโ€“Friday 08:00โ€“16:00. Bring ALL original documents โ€” copies are not always accepted.
1

Visit the Labour Centre with all documents

Bring your original ID, completed UI-2.1, UI-2.8 bank form, last payslip, and UI-19 (termination notice). Arrive early โ€” queues can be very long at the start and end of each month.

2

Get a queue number and complete a UI-2.2 form

At the Labour Centre you will be given a UI-2.2 form (Application for Unemployment Benefits) to fill in while you wait. Ask a staff member if you need help completing it.

3

Submit to a UIF official

When your number is called, hand all your documents to the official. They will capture your details in the system and give you a reference number.

4

Return every 4 weeks to sign

You must return to the Labour Centre every 4 weeks to sign your continuation form and confirm you are still unemployed. Without this, payments will stop.

โœ… Ask the official to stamp your booklet with the date of your next required visit so you don't miss it.
โš ๏ธ The Post Office channel for UIF is limited. Online (uFiling) or Labour Centre are recommended. Post Office is mainly used for UIF payments to recipients without bank accounts.
1

Submit at a Labour Centre first

Your UIF claim still needs to be lodged at a Labour Centre or via uFiling โ€” the Post Office does not accept new UIF applications. Visit a Labour Centre to register your claim.

2

Select Post Office as your payment method

When registering your claim, if you don't have a bank account, you can select the Post Office as your payment collection point. You will be given a payment slip or card to collect at your nearest SAPO.

3

Collect your UIF payment at the Post Office

Once approved, visit your nearest Post Office with your ID on the scheduled payment date to collect your UIF benefit in cash.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

  • UIF pays between 38% and 60% of your last salary, using an income replacement rate sliding scale โ€” lower earners receive a higher percentage. The benefit is capped at R17,712 per month. Use our UIF Calculator to estimate your exact payout based on your salary.
  • No โ€” UIF unemployment benefits are only for involuntary job loss: retrenchment, dismissal, or contract ending. If you resigned voluntarily, you do not qualify for unemployment UIF. However, you may still qualify for illness, maternity, or parental UIF benefits depending on your situation.
  • No. Receiving UIF benefits disqualifies you from the SASSA SRD R370 grant for those months. SASSA checks the UIF database monthly. Once your UIF benefits end, you may apply for or resume receiving the SRD grant provided you meet all other requirements.
  • You can only claim UIF if contributions were made on your behalf. If your employer failed to register or pay UIF contributions, you should report this to the Department of Employment and Labour on 0800 030 007. They can investigate and take action against the employer. In some cases, the employer may be ordered to pay the outstanding contributions, making you eligible to claim.
  • Your employer is legally required to provide the UI-2.1 form. If they refuse, visit the Department of Employment and Labour Labour Centre and explain the situation. The Labour Centre can contact your employer directly and compel them to comply. You should also bring any other proof of employment โ€” payslips, employment contract, or bank statements showing salary deposits.
