labour.gov.za.๐ฅ๏ธ How to Apply โ Choose Your Method
Register on uFiling
Go to ufiling.labour.gov.za and click Register. Use your 13-digit ID number and an email address. You'll receive a confirmation email โ click the link to activate your account.
Go to Apply for Benefits โ Unemployment
After logging in, click Apply for Benefits from the left menu, then select Unemployment Benefits. You'll be asked to confirm your personal details match your ID.
Complete your employment information
Fill in your employer's details, your last working date, your reason for leaving (retrenchment / dismissal / contract ended), and your last salary. This information must match your UI-2.1 form.
Upload your documents
Upload scanned copies or clear photos of: your ID, UI-2.1 form (signed by employer), UI-2.8 bank form (stamped by bank), and your last payslip. Make sure all documents are readable.
Submit and note your reference number
Review your application, then click Submit. You will receive a claim reference number โ write this down or screenshot it. You'll need it to track your claim.
Track your claim and sign for continuation
Log in to uFiling to track your claim status. Once approved, you must sign a continuation form every 4 weeks to continue receiving payments. This can also be done online. Missing a signature stops your payments.
Visit the Labour Centre with all documents
Bring your original ID, completed UI-2.1, UI-2.8 bank form, last payslip, and UI-19 (termination notice). Arrive early โ queues can be very long at the start and end of each month.
Get a queue number and complete a UI-2.2 form
At the Labour Centre you will be given a UI-2.2 form (Application for Unemployment Benefits) to fill in while you wait. Ask a staff member if you need help completing it.
Submit to a UIF official
When your number is called, hand all your documents to the official. They will capture your details in the system and give you a reference number.
Return every 4 weeks to sign
You must return to the Labour Centre every 4 weeks to sign your continuation form and confirm you are still unemployed. Without this, payments will stop.
Submit at a Labour Centre first
Your UIF claim still needs to be lodged at a Labour Centre or via uFiling โ the Post Office does not accept new UIF applications. Visit a Labour Centre to register your claim.
Select Post Office as your payment method
When registering your claim, if you don't have a bank account, you can select the Post Office as your payment collection point. You will be given a payment slip or card to collect at your nearest SAPO.
Collect your UIF payment at the Post Office
Once approved, visit your nearest Post Office with your ID on the scheduled payment date to collect your UIF benefit in cash.
