SASSA Offices Banking Details Contact SASSA Check Status →If one or two specific months were declined while others went through fine, this guide shows you exactly what to do - including what to write in the appeal text box for your specific reason code.
⚖️ Open Appeal Portal →Every declined month has a specific reason code. You need to know this code before you appeal - it determines what explanation to give. Here's how to find it:
Enter your ID number and registered phone number. Request an OTP and verify.
Scroll through your status history. Each month shows a status - look for "Declined" months and note the reason code shown (e.g., means_income_source_identified, uif_registered, etc.).
See the table below. Each reason code has its own detailed page explaining exactly why SASSA declined you and what to write in your appeal.
Copy and adapt the appropriate template below into the appeal text box on the ITSAA portal. Always replace the placeholders in brackets with your actual details.
You cannot appeal all declined months at once. You must go back to the ITSAA portal and submit a separate appeal for each declined month. The portal remembers your login during the session, so you can do multiple appeals in one visit.
The thing nobody tells you is that appeals are per month, not per person. I've watched people submit one appeal, assume it covered everything, and then wait months wondering why only a single payment came through. If five months were declined, that's five separate submissions.
Do them in one sitting. The portal keeps you logged in, so once you've done the OTP you can work through the list without verifying again each time. It's tedious, but it's ten minutes rather than five separate afternoons.
On the wording: short and specific beats long and emotional. The assessor is checking your claim against a database record, so the useful things to give them are dates, amounts and reasons. "I was declined for means_income_source_identified in March. The R800 deposit was a once-off payment from my brother for funeral costs, not income" does more work than three paragraphs about how hard the year has been.
And be honest. Appeals are checked against real records, and a claim that doesn't match what SASSA can see does more harm than not appealing at all.

The standard appeal window is 90 calendar days from the date of the declined month. If this has passed, the declined month may no longer appear in the appeal portal's list. Here's what to try:
The 90-day rule is not always strictly enforced. Log in and check - some users have successfully submitted late appeals, especially for system-error-related declines.
Explain that you want to appeal a specific month but the window may have passed. Ask whether a late appeal submission is possible and what the process is. Get a reference number for the call.
Bring your ID, a printout of your SASSA status page showing the declined month, and a written explanation of why you are appealing late. Request that a SASSA official log the appeal on your behalf.
As a last resort, you can write to the Director-General of the Department of Social Development with your appeal. This is a formal administrative appeal. Contact details: Department of Social Development, Private Bag X901, Pretoria, 0001.
When you submit an appeal, screenshot the confirmation page immediately. The reference number is essential for tracking. Keep it somewhere safe - the portal does not always email it to you.
To check your appeal status, return to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal, log in with the same ID and phone number, and look for your submitted appeal. You can also call 0800 60 10 11 with your reference number.
If your appeal is approved: SASSA will notify you by SMS. Backpay for the approved month will be paid into your registered bank account within 2–4 weeks.
