You have the right to appeal. Free, online, takes 5 minutes at the official government portal.

Opens the official Department of Social Development portal. SASSA will never charge you to appeal.

βœ…
You can appeal if any of these apply to you
  • Your SRD status shows Declined for any month
  • You believe the decline reason is wrong β€” e.g. you did not have income above R624
  • You were declined for uif_registered but were not receiving UIF payments
  • You were declined for nsfas_registered but are no longer a student
  • You believe a government database had incorrect information about you
  • The decline was less than 90 days ago for each specific month

πŸ“‹ How to Appeal β€” Step by Step

⏰
Check your deadline before you start
You have 90 days from the date SASSA declined each specific month to appeal it. If you were declined for January, February, and March β€” you must submit three separate appeals and each has its own 90-day countdown. Use the deadline calculator in the sidebar to check yours.
1

Go to the official appeal portal

Open srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal on your phone or computer. This is the official portal run by the Department of Social Development β€” not SASSA itself. It is the only place where SRD grant appeals are processed.

βœ… Make sure the website address is exactly srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal β€” scam sites use similar-sounding names. Never pay money to appeal.
2

Enter your ID number and phone number

Type your 13-digit South African ID number in the first box β€” no spaces, exactly as it appears on your ID document. Enter the same mobile number you used when you applied for the SRD grant in the second box.

⚠️ If your phone number has changed since you applied, you cannot use the portal with the new number. Contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 to update it first.
3

Request and enter your OTP

Click Send OTP. You will receive a one-time PIN via SMS to the phone number on your application within 1–2 minutes. Enter the OTP and click Confirm.

βœ… Did not receive the OTP? Check that your phone has signal and airtime. Wait 2 minutes, then click "Resend OTP". If it still doesn't arrive, restart your phone and try again.
4

Select the month you are appealing

A list of declined months will appear on screen, showing every month where your SRD grant was declined. Tap the specific month you want to appeal.

You must appeal each declined month separately β€” you cannot bulk-appeal all months in one submission. Start with the oldest month first, as those deadlines expire soonest.

βœ… Months that have passed the 90-day deadline will be greyed out and cannot be appealed β€” this is why acting quickly is important.
5

Select your appeal reason and add details

The portal will show a dropdown with appeal reasons. Choose the one that best matches your situation. Then use the text box to explain in your own words why the decline was wrong.

Be specific. Mention dates, amounts, and facts. A vague appeal is less likely to succeed. See our template examples below for guidance on what to write.

6

Submit and save your reference number

Click Submit Appeal. A confirmation screen will appear with a reference number. Take a screenshot or write this number down immediately β€” you will need it to follow up on your appeal status.

You should also receive an SMS confirming your appeal was received. Your appeal is now in the hands of the ITSAA.

βœ… Repeat steps 4–6 for every declined month you want to appeal. Each month requires its own separate submission.

✍️ What to Write in Your Appeal β€” Templates

I am writing to appeal the decline of my SASSA SRD R370 grant for [MONTH AND YEAR]. My grant was declined with the reason "means_income_source_identified". I believe this decision is incorrect. During [MONTH], I did not have income above R624 per month. The deposit(s) that may have triggered this flag were: [DESCRIBE β€” e.g. "a once-off birthday gift of R500 from a family member" / "a refund from a store" / "a single transfer that was not income"]. I am unemployed and have no regular source of income. I meet all the other eligibility requirements for the SRD grant. I respectfully request that the ITSAA review my case and overturn this decline. I am available to provide any supporting documentation if required. My ID number: [YOUR ID NUMBER] My name: [YOUR FULL NAME]

Replace all [HIGHLIGHTED] sections with your actual details before submitting.

I am writing to appeal the decline of my SASSA SRD R370 grant for [MONTH AND YEAR]. My grant was declined with the reason "uif_registered". I believe this decision is incorrect. While I may be registered in the UIF system from a previous job, I did not receive any UIF payments during [MONTH]. I am not currently an active UIF claimant and have not received UIF benefits since [DATE YOU STOPPED RECEIVING UIF / OR: "I have never claimed UIF benefits"]. I am unemployed and earn no income. I meet all other eligibility requirements for the SRD grant and cannot also receive UIF as I am not an active claimant. I respectfully request that the ITSAA review my case, verify my UIF status with the Department of Labour, and overturn this decline. My ID number: [YOUR ID NUMBER] My name: [YOUR FULL NAME]

If you have a letter from the Department of Labour confirming you are not receiving UIF, mention it here and offer to submit it.

I am writing to appeal the decline of my SASSA SRD R370 grant for [MONTH AND YEAR]. My grant was declined with the reason "nsfas_registered". I believe this decision is incorrect. I am no longer a registered student. I [CHOOSE ONE: "completed my studies in [YEAR]" / "was deregistered from [INSTITUTION NAME] in [MONTH AND YEAR]" / "never registered for NSFAS funding"]. I am not currently receiving any NSFAS funding. I am unemployed and meet all the eligibility requirements for the SRD grant. I am not a full-time student and have no other income. I respectfully request that the ITSAA contact NSFAS to verify my status and overturn this decline. My ID number: [YOUR ID NUMBER] My name: [YOUR FULL NAME]

If you have a de-registration letter or proof of completion from your institution, mention it and offer to submit it.

I am writing to appeal the decline of my SASSA SRD R370 grant for [MONTH AND YEAR]. My grant was declined with the reason "[REASON CODE SHOWN ON YOUR STATUS PAGE]". I believe this decision is incorrect because [EXPLAIN IN YOUR OWN WORDS WHY β€” be as specific as possible]. I am unemployed and have no income above R624 per month. I do not receive any other government grant, UIF payment, NSFAS funding, or government salary. I am between the ages of 18 and 59. I respectfully request that the ITSAA review my case and overturn this decline. My ID number: [YOUR ID NUMBER] My name: [YOUR FULL NAME]

Use this template for decline reasons not covered by the other tabs. Replace [REASON CODE] with whatever appears on your SASSA status page.

πŸ“ What to Write β€” By Decline Reason

Find your decline reason code and use the matching appeal argument

means_income_source_identified
Income above R624 detected
Explain the specific deposit: was it a gift, a refund, a family transfer? If it was a once-off, say so clearly. If it was a banking error, state that. Name the amount and source specifically.
uif_registered
Registered for UIF benefits
Confirm you did not receive UIF payments that month. Being registered is not the same as receiving. Offer to provide a DoL letter proving you are not an active claimant.
nsfas_registered
NSFAS student funding
State when you stopped being a student or that you never received NSFAS. Offer to provide proof of de-registration or your graduation certificate.
existing_sassa_grant
Already receiving a SASSA grant
If the system flagged you in error β€” e.g. you stopped receiving another grant β€” state when it ended and provide the grant number if you have it. This is the hardest to appeal as it is usually correct.
gov_payroll_registered
On government payroll
State that you are no longer employed by government and provide your termination or resignation date. Offer to submit your UIF confirmation of retrenchment (UI-19 form).
identity_verification_failed
ID details don't match
Confirm the exact name on your ID document. State that you have verified your details are correct. Request the ITSAA to verify your identity against DHA records directly.

Appeal submitted at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal
You receive an SMS confirming the appeal was received and a reference number on screen. Keep this.

The Independent Tribunal retrieves your SASSA records and the data SASSA used to decline your grant. They compare this to your appeal statement.

SMS notification of outcome
You will receive an SMS. If successful β€” SASSA will schedule backpay of R370 for each overturned month into your bank account within 2–4 weeks. If rejected β€” the SMS will state the reason and you can escalate.

If you have heard nothing after 90 days, call the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11 with your reference number. You can also visit your nearest SASSA office.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most appeals are resolved between 60 and 90 days. Straightforward cases β€” like UIF status errors or income database mistakes β€” often resolve faster. You will receive an SMS once the ITSAA has made a decision. There is no way to speed up the process by calling, but you can follow up with your reference number after 90 days.
  • Yes. If your appeal is successful, SASSA will pay you R370 for every month that was overturned, as a lump sum. This is called backpay. It is paid directly to your registered bank account or via your SASSA card, usually within 2–4 weeks of the ITSAA decision. If you appealed 3 months successfully, you would receive R1,110 backpay.
  • You can submit appeals for multiple months, but you must do each month separately β€” there is no bulk appeal option. Start with the oldest months first, as those 90-day deadlines expire soonest. Each appeal is treated independently by the ITSAA.
  • Not directly. A successful appeal only restores the specific months you appealed. Future months are still assessed independently every month by SASSA's automated system. If the underlying issue is fixed (e.g. your UIF status was corrected), future months may also be approved β€” but that depends on the monthly check, not the appeal outcome.
  • You can visit your nearest SASSA office and ask a staff member to help you submit the appeal in person. Bring your ID document and the phone number you used to apply. Some SASSA offices have tablets or computers available. You can also ask at a local library or community centre.
  • If the ITSAA rejects your appeal, you will receive an SMS explaining the reason. You can escalate to the High Court, but this requires legal assistance and is rarely worth it for a single month's R370. Instead, focus on ensuring future months are not declined by keeping your banking details updated and making sure no unexpected income passes through your account during the month SASSA checks.
  • The appeal portal requires the phone number you used when you applied. If your number has changed, you need to update it first. Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 or update your number at srd.sassa.gov.za before attempting to appeal. Once updated, you can proceed with the appeal.
  • Yes, completely free. SASSA and the ITSAA do not charge any fee to submit or process an appeal. If anyone asks you to pay money to appeal your grant β€” by phone, WhatsApp, or any website β€” it is a scam. Only use srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal to appeal.
