π How to Appeal β Step by Step
Go to the official appeal portal
Open srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal on your phone or computer. This is the official portal run by the Department of Social Development β not SASSA itself. It is the only place where SRD grant appeals are processed.
Enter your ID number and phone number
Type your 13-digit South African ID number in the first box β no spaces, exactly as it appears on your ID document. Enter the same mobile number you used when you applied for the SRD grant in the second box.
Request and enter your OTP
Click Send OTP. You will receive a one-time PIN via SMS to the phone number on your application within 1β2 minutes. Enter the OTP and click Confirm.
Select the month you are appealing
A list of declined months will appear on screen, showing every month where your SRD grant was declined. Tap the specific month you want to appeal.
You must appeal each declined month separately β you cannot bulk-appeal all months in one submission. Start with the oldest month first, as those deadlines expire soonest.
Select your appeal reason and add details
The portal will show a dropdown with appeal reasons. Choose the one that best matches your situation. Then use the text box to explain in your own words why the decline was wrong.
Be specific. Mention dates, amounts, and facts. A vague appeal is less likely to succeed. See our template examples below for guidance on what to write.
Submit and save your reference number
Click Submit Appeal. A confirmation screen will appear with a reference number. Take a screenshot or write this number down immediately β you will need it to follow up on your appeal status.
You should also receive an SMS confirming your appeal was received. Your appeal is now in the hands of the ITSAA.
βοΈ What to Write in Your Appeal β Templates
Replace all [HIGHLIGHTED] sections with your actual details before submitting.
If you have a letter from the Department of Labour confirming you are not receiving UIF, mention it here and offer to submit it.
If you have a de-registration letter or proof of completion from your institution, mention it and offer to submit it.
Use this template for decline reasons not covered by the other tabs. Replace [REASON CODE] with whatever appears on your SASSA status page.

β Frequently Asked Questions
-
Most appeals are resolved between 60 and 90 days. Straightforward cases β like UIF status errors or income database mistakes β often resolve faster. You will receive an SMS once the ITSAA has made a decision. There is no way to speed up the process by calling, but you can follow up with your reference number after 90 days.
-
Yes. If your appeal is successful, SASSA will pay you R370 for every month that was overturned, as a lump sum. This is called backpay. It is paid directly to your registered bank account or via your SASSA card, usually within 2β4 weeks of the ITSAA decision. If you appealed 3 months successfully, you would receive R1,110 backpay.
-
You can submit appeals for multiple months, but you must do each month separately β there is no bulk appeal option. Start with the oldest months first, as those 90-day deadlines expire soonest. Each appeal is treated independently by the ITSAA.
-
Not directly. A successful appeal only restores the specific months you appealed. Future months are still assessed independently every month by SASSA's automated system. If the underlying issue is fixed (e.g. your UIF status was corrected), future months may also be approved β but that depends on the monthly check, not the appeal outcome.
-
You can visit your nearest SASSA office and ask a staff member to help you submit the appeal in person. Bring your ID document and the phone number you used to apply. Some SASSA offices have tablets or computers available. You can also ask at a local library or community centre.
-
If the ITSAA rejects your appeal, you will receive an SMS explaining the reason. You can escalate to the High Court, but this requires legal assistance and is rarely worth it for a single month's R370. Instead, focus on ensuring future months are not declined by keeping your banking details updated and making sure no unexpected income passes through your account during the month SASSA checks.
-
The appeal portal requires the phone number you used when you applied. If your number has changed, you need to update it first. Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 or update your number at srd.sassa.gov.za before attempting to appeal. Once updated, you can proceed with the appeal.
-
Yes, completely free. SASSA and the ITSAA do not charge any fee to submit or process an appeal. If anyone asks you to pay money to appeal your grant β by phone, WhatsApp, or any website β it is a scam. Only use srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal to appeal.
