SASSA Offices Banking Details Contact SASSA Check Status →The SRD R370 grant has a strict age limit: you must be between 18 and 59 years old (inclusive). If your date of birth means you fall outside this range, SASSA's system will automatically decline your application.
SASSA's system has calculated, based on your ID number (which encodes your date of birth), that you are either under 18 or 60 years of age or older. The SRD R370 Social Relief of Distress grant is specifically designed for working-age adults who are unemployed and have no income. Those under 18 are not considered working-age adults under the policy, and those aged 60 and above qualify for the Old Age Pension instead.
Your ID number encodes your date of birth in the first 6 digits. SASSA extracts this automatically. If you have just turned 18, there's a processing lag of 1–2 months before SASSA's system recognises your new eligibility. If you have just turned 60, you are no longer eligible for SRD but can immediately apply for the Old Age Pension.
You are not eligible for SRD before your 18th birthday. Apply online at srd.sassa.gov.za from the month you turn 18. There is usually a processing lag - your first approved payment may be 1–2 months after your birthday.
You are no longer eligible for SRD but now qualify for the Old Age Pension (also called the Senior Citizens Grant) at R2,400/month. Visit your nearest SASSA office to apply. You'll need your ID, proof of residence, and bank details.
Your ID number encodes your date of birth. If SASSA's system has your date of birth wrong, this may be a DHA database issue. Visit Home Affairs to verify and correct your date of birth in the database.
If SASSA is still declining you in the month after your 18th birthday based on this code, appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za and explain you have now turned 18 and are eligible. Include your date of birth.
If you are under 18, the Child Support Grant (received by your caregiver) or the Care Dependency Grant (if you have a disability) may apply. Contact SASSA for guidance specific to your situation.
The SRD grant runs from 18 to 59. If you're outside that range and your date of birth is correct, this decline is right and an appeal won't change it.
What matters more is what you do next, because turning 60 isn't bad news. The Old Age Pension pays substantially more than the R370 SRD grant, and you should be applying for it rather than fighting the SRD decline. Don't wait for SASSA to move you across automatically - it doesn't work that way. You need to apply at an office.
The one case where appealing makes sense is a wrong date of birth. If your ID has the wrong year on it, that's a Home Affairs correction first, then a SASSA appeal referencing the corrected record. Fixing it at SASSA alone won't hold.
