🕐 PENDING
Pending means SASSA is still checking your eligibility. Every month, SASSA runs an automated check of your ID against live government databases — SARS, UIF, Home Affairs, NSFAS, and PERSAL. While this check is running, your status shows Pending. You do not need to do anything. Do not reapply.
💡
The most important thing to know
Pending is not the same as Declined. Most Pending statuses resolve to Approved. Keep checking your status at srd.sassa.gov.za every few days. Only take action if it has been Pending past the 25th of the month with no update.
⏱️ What Happens While You Are Pending
Month-by-month Pending timeline
What SASSA is doing and when you need to act
Day 1–5
NORMAL ✅
Monthly check begins
SASSA starts the new month's eligibility cycle. Your status resets to Pending as the automated system begins cross-referencing your ID. This is completely normal — all active applicants start the month as Pending.
Day 5–14
NORMAL ✅
Database checks running
SASSA is checking your details against SARS (tax), UIF (unemployment), Home Affairs (identity), NSFAS (student funding), and PERSAL (government payroll). Simple cases resolve quickly. Complex or flagged cases take longer.
Day 14–21
WATCH ⚠️
Still Pending — keep monitoring
If you are still Pending after 2 weeks, it may mean a database flag is under manual review. Most still resolve to Approved. Keep checking every 2–3 days. Do not reapply.
Day 21–25
ACT ⚠️
Approaching end of payment cycle
If your status is still Pending by the 21st–25th of the month, your payment for this month may be at risk. Check your status daily. If it has not resolved by the 25th, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number.
After 25th
CALL SASSA 📞
Call SASSA if still unresolved
A Pending status past the 25th of the month that never resolved to Approved or Declined may indicate a technical issue with your account. Call 0800 60 10 11 (free) or visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID.
🔎 Why Is My Status Still Pending?
High application volumes
Millions of South Africans receive the SRD grant. SASSA processes these in batches. At the start of each month, the queue is longest. Your batch simply hasn't been processed yet — this is the most common reason.
Bank verification in progress
Even if your eligibility check passes, SASSA still needs to verify your banking details with your bank. If there is any mismatch on the bank's side, this adds extra processing time.
Database flag under review
One of the databases (SARS, UIF, etc.) returned an uncertain result — not a definite disqualification, but a flag that needs manual review. This takes longer but often resolves to Approved.
Home Affairs sync delay
Your ID verification against the Department of Home Affairs is still processing. This can lag if DHA's systems are under load. Usually resolves within a few more days.
Phone number recently changed
If you recently updated your phone number on your SASSA application, the change may be processing. Your status may show Pending while the update is verified.
System maintenance
SASSA periodically performs system upgrades. During these windows, statuses may stay Pending longer than usual. Check the official SASSA social media pages for maintenance notices.
✅ What To Do vs What Not To Do
✗ Don't do this
Things that won't help
- Reapplying for the SRD grant — creates a duplicate and causes more delays
- Submitting an appeal — you cannot appeal a Pending status, only a Declined one
- Calling SASSA every day in the first 2 weeks — the helpline cannot speed up the batch process
- Paying anyone to "fix" your Pending status — always a scam
- Closing your bank account while Pending — blocks payment if approved
✓ Do this instead
Actions that actually help
- Check your status at srd.sassa.gov.za every 3–5 days
- Make sure your banking details are correct and up to date on the portal
- Keep your phone number consistent — don't change it mid-month
- If still Pending after the 25th, call 0800 60 10 11 (free) with your ID number ready
- If Pending resolves to Declined, check the decline guide for your specific reason
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
-
Pending means SASSA is still deciding — it is neither approved nor declined. Most Pending statuses resolve to Approved, but some resolve to Declined. There is no guarantee of payment while Pending. Keep checking your status. If it changes to Approved with a payment date, you will receive your grant.
-
Most Pending statuses resolve within 7 to 14 days. During busy periods at the start of the month, it can take up to 21 days. If your status is still Pending after the 25th of the month, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 to follow up.
-
Yes, completely normal. Every month starts fresh with a new eligibility check. Even if you were Approved in January, your February status will show Pending while SASSA runs that month's check. This is not a problem — it does not mean your grant is being cancelled.
-
No. You cannot appeal a Pending status — the appeal process at srd.dsd.gov.za is only for months that have been formally Declined. While your status is Pending, you must wait for it to resolve. If it resolves to Declined, you can then appeal that month within 90 days.
-
A Pending status that lasts more than 30 days without resolving is unusual and may indicate a technical issue with your application or a record that needs manual intervention. Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 (free) and ask them to investigate. Have your ID number and the mobile number on your application ready. You can also visit your nearest SASSA office in person.
-
Yes. If your status resolves to Approved — even late in the month or early in the next month — SASSA will still pay you the R370 for that month. The payment date shown on your status will reflect when the payment is scheduled. It is not lost.
