Status says "Bank Details Pending"?
This means SASSA is verifying your bank account with your bank. You cannot be paid until this is resolved. It takes 3โ€“7 working days after you submit your details. If it has been longer, your account details may have failed verification โ€” go to srd.sassa.gov.za to check and resubmit.

๐ŸŒ Method 1 โ€” Update Online (Fastest)

1

Go to the official SASSA SRD portal

Open srd.sassa.gov.za on your phone or computer. This is the only official portal โ€” do not use any other site.

2

Enter your ID number and phone number

Type your 13-digit South African ID number and the mobile number you used when you applied. These must match exactly.

โš ๏ธ If your phone number has changed, update it first. Call 0800 60 10 11 to update your number before proceeding.
3

Request and enter your OTP

Click Send OTP. You will receive a one-time PIN via SMS within 1โ€“2 minutes. Enter it and click Confirm.

4

Select "Update Banking Details"

From the menu on your profile page, look for "Update Banking Details" or "Change Payment Method". Click it.

5

Enter your bank details carefully

You will need to enter:

โ€ข Bank name โ€” select from the dropdown
โ€ข Account number โ€” double-check every digit
โ€ข Account type โ€” Savings or Cheque/Current
โ€ข Branch code โ€” most banks use a universal code

โœ… Triple-check your account number. A single wrong digit means your grant will be paid into someone else's account and is extremely difficult to recover.
6

Submit and wait for verification

Click Submit. SASSA will now verify your account with your bank. Your status may show Bank Details Pending for 3โ€“7 working days. Once verified, you will be scheduled for your next payment.

โœ… You should receive an SMS confirming the update was received. If you don't get one within 24 hours, log in again to check that the update saved.

๐Ÿ”ง Common Banking Problems โ€” Fixes

โ“ My bank details are correct but still showing "Bank Details Pending" after 7 days
This usually means your bank rejected SASSA's verification attempt โ€” often because the account type is wrong (e.g. entered Cheque when it's a Savings account) or the name on the account doesn't match your ID exactly. Log in to srd.sassa.gov.za, delete the current bank details, and resubmit them from scratch โ€” making sure the account type is correct.
โ“ I submitted the wrong account number โ€” how do I fix it?
Log in to srd.sassa.gov.za immediately and update your bank details with the correct account number. If a payment was already sent to the wrong account, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 urgently. Recovering funds sent to a wrong account is very difficult โ€” act fast.
โ“ SASSA says my account number is invalid
Check that you are entering only the digits of your account number โ€” no spaces, dashes, or leading zeros unless they are part of the actual account number. Also confirm the account type (Savings vs Cheque) and that the branch code is correct for your bank. If unsure, call your bank and ask them to confirm your full account number and type.
โ“ My bank account was closed โ€” what do I do?
You must update your banking details immediately. If your account is closed and SASSA tries to pay you, the funds will be returned to SASSA. Open a new account (Capitec is easiest) and update your details at srd.sassa.gov.za. SASSA will then reschedule your payment โ€” you will not lose the money, but it may delay payment by one to two payment cycles.
โ“ I don't have a bank account โ€” can I still get the SRD grant?
Yes. Select the South African Post Office (SAPO) as your payment method on the SASSA portal. You will collect your R370 cash in person at your nearest Post Office each month, using your ID document. Note: You cannot collect on someone else's behalf โ€” you must go in person.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

  • After you submit updated banking details, SASSA verifies them with your bank. This takes 3 to 7 working days. Your status will show "Bank Details Pending" during this time. Do not submit another update โ€” wait for the first one to process. If it has been more than 10 working days, call 0800 60 10 11.
  • If your grant is paid into a bank account, the money is yours and can be accessed normally with your bank card. If you collect via Post Office, you generally cannot send someone else โ€” SASSA requires the grant recipient to collect in person with their ID. In exceptional medical cases, a SASSA office may arrange a proxy โ€” contact your local office.
  • SASSA does allow banking detail updates but may limit how frequently you can change them as a fraud prevention measure. Try to avoid unnecessary changes. If you must update your details, do so well before the end of the month โ€” changes made right before payment day may not process in time for that month's payment.
  • Updating your banking details does not affect your eligibility or approval status. However, your payment will be paused while the new account is being verified ("Bank Details Pending"). Once verified, you will receive your next scheduled payment.
