❓ Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. The Child Support Grant belongs to your child - not you as the caregiver. You can receive CSG for your child and the SRD R370 for yourself simultaneously, provided you meet all SRD eligibility requirements. However, the R580 CSG payment deposited into your account may sometimes trigger the income check - if so, you can appeal.
  • Only if the income for that month exceeded R624. SASSA checks your bank account monthly. In months where you earned and received more than R624, you will be declined for that month. In months where you earned nothing or less than R624, you may be approved. The check is independent for each month.
  • Yes. You become eligible on your 18th birthday. You can apply at srd.sassa.gov.za as soon as you have turned 18. Make sure you have your SA ID (you should apply for your ID before turning 18 at Home Affairs).
  • Yes. Once your UIF benefits end, you become eligible for the SRD grant (provided you meet all other criteria). If you already have an SRD application, it should automatically be checked again next month. If you don't have an application, apply at srd.sassa.gov.za.
  • No. SASSA checks your personal bank account only - not household income or family members' earnings. The R624 threshold applies to money received into your own account in that calendar month. If your parents deposit money into your account to help you, that deposit will count. Cash assistance that never touches your account does not show up in the bank check.
  • Not automatically. SASSA checks the deposits into your bank account. Informal cash income that is never deposited won't appear. However, if you deposit your informal earnings and the total exceeds R624 in a given month, you will be declined for that month. Many people in informal trade keep their business income separate from any bank account linked to their phone number for this reason.
  • Yes, and this is very common. SASSA re-checks eligibility every month. If you earned above R624 in March, you may be declined for March but approved again in April if your income was below the threshold. Each month stands on its own. You do not need to reapply - your existing application is rechecked automatically each month.

πŸ” How SASSA Checks Your Eligibility Every Month

Many applicants are confused about why they are approved one month and declined the next. The SRD grant uses an automated monthly means-test - here is exactly how it works:

  1. Bank data cross-check. SASSA submits your ID number to SARS (South African Revenue Service) and financial institutions. Any deposits into accounts linked to your ID during the previous month are checked against the R624 threshold.
  2. Government databases. SASSA checks the Department of Labour's UIF payments database, PERSAL (government payroll), NSFAS payment records, and the national social grant register - all automatically.
  3. Home Affairs verification. Your ID is checked against the Department of Home Affairs population register to confirm citizenship and that you are alive (fraud prevention).
  4. Monthly result issued. Based on all checks, you receive one of four outcomes for that month: Approved, Pending, Declined, or Reapplication Required. If declined, the specific reason is shown in your status.
Important: SASSA does not check the balance in your account - only deposits (income received). Savings you already had sitting in an account should not count against you, though in practice some applicants report issues. If you believe your income check is wrong, you have the right to appeal within 90 days.

πŸ“Š If You Don't Qualify for SRD - What Else Can You Apply For?

The SRD R370 grant is specifically for unemployed adults aged 18–59. If you don't qualify for SRD, there may be another grant you're entitled to:

⚠️ Special Circumstances & Edge Cases

You are a refugee or asylum seeker

Recognised refugees (Section 24 permit) and asylum seekers (Section 22 permit) with valid, unexpired permits from the Department of Home Affairs can apply. SASSA will verify your permit. If your permit expires, your grant will be suspended until you renew it.

You are in prison or recently released

People currently incarcerated do not qualify - they are considered to have food and shelter provided by the state. After release, you can apply immediately. Your criminal record does not affect eligibility; only your current circumstances matter.

You are a student (not on NSFAS)

Private students, part-time students, or full-time students who do NOT receive NSFAS funding may qualify for SRD, provided they meet the income and other criteria. NSFAS specifically disqualifies you because it counts as financial support.

You have a spouse or partner who works

Your spouse's income does not count against you. Only deposits into your own personal bank account are assessed. Married and cohabiting applicants are assessed individually - each partner can apply and be approved or declined independently.
