Children's grants (Child Support, Foster Care, Care Dependency) - 3 December. SRD R370 - last week of December, and this is the month where that window gets complicated. Three public holidays fall in a row from the 25th.

If you are on a permanent grant you are in the clear. The 1st falls on a Tuesday, so SASSA gets three straight working days at the start of the month and the usual order holds. Your money is in before the shops get busy and well before anything closes for the holidays.
Three holidays in a row from 25 December. Christmas Day is Friday the 25th. The Day of Goodwill is Saturday the 26th, and because it lands on a Saturday the Public Holidays Act moves the holiday to the following Monday, which is the 28th. That gives you Friday, Saturday and Monday all closed. Only Tuesday the 29th, Wednesday the 30th and Thursday the 31st are working days in that final week.
SRD R370 payments are spread across the last week of the month, with a separate date for each person. In a normal month that is five working days to play with. In December 2026 it is three.
If your usual date falls on the 25th, 26th or 28th, expect one of two things. SASSA either pushes the payment out before the 24th, or it processes on Tuesday the 29th once offices reopen. Neither is a problem with your application and neither needs an appeal. It is the calendar, not your status.
Check your own date at srd.sassa.gov.za from about the middle of December. You can also dial *120*3210# at no cost, or message the official WhatsApp line on 082 046 8553. Knowing your date before the shops fill up is worth ten minutes of your time.
The Day of Reconciliation falls on Wednesday 16 December. It sits in the middle of the month and does not touch the permanent grant dates, which have long since been paid by then. What it does affect is everything around collecting. SASSA offices close, banks close, and the helpline runs on holiday staffing. If you need to sort out banking details or query a status, do it before the 15th or leave it until the 17th.
Every December I get the same message from readers: the money has not come and nobody is answering the phone. Before you assume the worst, check your status page. It updates whether or not the offices are open, and it will tell you if the problem is a decline rather than a delay.
If your status says approved and the date has passed by more than two working days, allowing for the holidays, then call 0800 60 10 11. Do not reapply. A second application does not speed anything up and it can create a duplicate that takes longer to untangle than the original wait.
Watch out for scams in December as well. This is the busiest month for fake SASSA messages, and they get more convincing when people are anxious about money. SASSA will never ask for your PIN or a fee to release a payment. Our guide to SASSA scams covers what the current ones look like.
New Year's Day falls on a Friday in 2027, which is a public holiday. The first working day of the year is Monday 4 January, so that is when the January run starts rather than the 1st. Something to keep in mind if you are budgeting across the break, because the gap between your December payment and your January one will be longer than usual.
