SASSA Grants & Help
South Africa 2026

I built SassaHelp because getting clear answers about SASSA should not be this hard. Find your grant status, understand what it means, and know what to do next - without the confusing jargon.

πŸ” Check My SASSA Status β†’

Opens the official SASSA portal - srd.sassa.gov.za. Enter your ID number and mobile number.

πŸ“‹ What Does Your SASSA Status Mean?

βœ… Approved

Your grant is approved

Your eligibility check passed for this month. You should see a Payday date next to this status. If there is no date yet, your payment is being scheduled - it usually appears within 5 to 10 working days.

Check payment dates β†’
πŸ• Pending

Still being checked

SASSA is cross-checking your ID against SARS, UIF, Home Affairs, and NSFAS databases. This happens every month. Do not reapply. If it is still Pending after the 15th of the month, check again in a few days.

What to do when Pending β†’
❌ Declined

Not approved this month

SASSA found a reason you do not qualify for this specific month. A reason code will be shown - see the table below for what each code means. You can appeal within 90 days if you believe the decision is wrong.

πŸ‘€ Identity Failed

ID verification problem

Your details do not match the Department of Home Affairs records. Common causes: typo in your name, nickname used instead of full name, or your ID has not yet synced to all government systems.

How to fix identity failed β†’
🏦 Bank Details Pending

Banking info missing

You have not submitted banking details or your bank account failed SASSA's verification. This blocks payment even if your grant is approved. Visit srd.sassa.gov.za to update your banking details immediately.

How to update bank details β†’
πŸ”Ž Referred

Flagged for extra checks

Your profile has been flagged - usually due to a security concern, fraud risk, or a mismatch linked to your phone number. SASSA will send you an SMS with a secure link to complete biometric (facial recognition) verification.

❌ SASSA Declined Reason Codes - Explained in Plain Language

SASSA shows a reason code when your grant is declined. Find yours below and see exactly what it means and what to do.

Reason Code What It Means & What To Do
means_income_source_identified
Income above R624 detected in your bank account
SASSA's monthly means test found deposits over R624. This includes wages, family transfers, or any other money received. If it was a once-off gift or error, you can appeal within 30 days.
uif_registered
You appear to be registered for UIF benefits
You cannot receive SRD and UIF in the same month. If you are no longer receiving UIF, contact the Department of Labour to update your status, then appeal your SASSA decline.
nsfas_registered
You are registered as receiving NSFAS funding
If you are no longer a student or have graduated, provide proof of de-registration from your institution when you appeal at srd.dsd.gov.za.
existing_sassa_grant
You are already receiving another SASSA grant
You cannot receive the SRD grant while also receiving a disability grant, old age pension, or child support grant in your own name. This is not an error.
gov_payroll_registered
You appear on a government payroll as an employee
If you are no longer employed by government, you will need to appeal and provide proof of your termination or resignation.
identity_verification_failed
Your details do not match Home Affairs records
Check that your name is entered exactly as it appears on your ID document. No nicknames or initials. See our identity guide β†’
self_exclusionary_response_found
You indicated you have other income or support
During your application you may have indicated you receive support above the threshold. If your circumstances have changed, you can reapply or appeal.
age_outside_range
You are outside the eligible age range (18–59)
The SRD grant is only for people aged 18 to 59. If you are 60 or older, you may qualify for the Old Age Pension instead. If you turned 60 this month, the decline is automatic - not an error.

A note from Paul Geddes, Founder of SassaHelp

SassaHelp exists because SASSA's own website and helpline can be difficult to navigate - especially when you are stressed about why your grant was declined or why your payment hasn't arrived. I try to answer the questions I hear most often, in plain language, with no jargon.

The most common things I hear from readers: Why was I declined? (usually a bank deposit flagged as income), What does Pending mean? (SASSA is still checking, be patient until the 15th), and Do I need to reapply? (almost never - your application stays active). The guides below answer all of these and more.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions I get asked most on SassaHelp. I've written the answers the way I'd explain it to someone asking me directly.

  • Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and enter your 13-digit SA ID number and the mobile number you used when applying. The website is the most reliable option. If it is down (which happens), try the USSD code *120*3210# - it works with no data on any network. You can also send "SASSA" on WhatsApp to 082 046 8553 (look for the green verified tick), or call 0800 60 10 11 for free.
  • Pending means SASSA is still running your monthly cross-check against SARS, UIF, Home Affairs, and NSFAS. It is not a decline - it just means the process is not finished yet. Do not reapply. In my experience, Pending usually resolves by the 15th to 20th of the month. If it has not changed after the 20th, call 0800 60 10 11 to ask for an update.
  • This is the most common decline I hear about. It means SASSA's monthly means test detected money entering your bank account above R624. This includes wages, UIF payments, money from family, or any other deposit - even a once-off gift. If the deposit was not regular income, appeal it at srd.dsd.gov.za within 90 days and explain the source in your own words. The tribunal does consider context. See our full guide to means_income_source_identified β†’
  • Approved just means your eligibility check passed. SASSA adds your payment date when they schedule you in a payment batch - this usually takes 5 to 10 working days after the approved status appears. If there is still no date after 14 days, the most likely cause is that your banking details have an issue. Check them at srd.sassa.gov.za and make sure your account is still open and active.
  • Go to srd.dsd.gov.za, enter your ID and phone number, request an OTP, select the month you want to appeal, and submit your reason. You have 90 days from each declined month to appeal. Appeals are handled by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) and take 60 to 90 days. If successful, SASSA pays you full backpay. See our step-by-step appeal guide β†’
  • No - and this is something a lot of people get wrong. You apply once and your application stays active. SASSA checks your eligibility fresh every month automatically. The only reasons you would need to do anything are: you changed your phone number (update it at srd.sassa.gov.za), you changed your bank account (update banking details), or SASSA cancelled your application entirely - which is rare and different from a monthly decline.
  • Yes, in most cases. The Child Support Grant belongs to the child, not you as the caregiver - so receiving it on behalf of a child does not disqualify you from the SRD grant. However, some readers report the R580 CSG payment being flagged as "income" in their account. If that happens, appeal it and explain in the appeal that it is a child's grant, not your own income.
  • The SRD R370 grant has been officially extended to March 2027 - Finance Minister Godongwana confirmed this in the February 2026 budget, with R35.2 billion allocated. The grant amount stays at R370 per month. If you are already approved, you do not need to reapply - just keep checking your status each month as usual. See the full SRD extension article β†’
