Documents Required For SASSA Disability Grant

The following are the required documents needed for the SASSA Disability Grant application process:

1. Valid South African ID Card

Your South African ID card is very important, this is the first document needed when applying for the SASSA Disability grant. SA ID card will verify your identity and your current living status in South Africa. So, make sure to carry your original 13-digit bar-coded South African ID card number when visiting the SASSA office to apply for a disability grant.

However, you only need to attach a copy of your ID but it is always recommeded to carry the original also. Make sure the printed copy you are attaching is clear and all the information is readable.

2. Medical Report Confirming Disability

You also need to attach a document to confirm your disability, along with your application form. This document could be anything, like a Medical report from a qualified medical professional, or a Functional assessment report. This report will verify your disability and make you eligible for receiving the disability grant from SASSA.

3. Residence Proof

SASSA grants are for South African Citizens, so you need to verify that you’re currently a resident of South Africa. There are several documents available which you can use as the residence proof, such as:

  • Utility Bill: Provide your latest Utility bill, such as water, and electricity bill as proof of residence.
  • Lease agreement: A lease agreement is also acceptable as proof of residence.
  • You can also provide a Signed affidavit from your landlord confirming your residence.

4. Income Proof

SASSA will also verify your income to be eligible for the grant, Disability grant is only offered to individuals with disability and unable to support their expenses. SASSA ensures that the grant is given only to needed applicants. If you have any income source then provide your income proof such as paylips, bank statements, investment income statements etc.

If you have an income, then it must be less than R86,280 per year (individuals) and less than R172,560 per year (married couples combined income), to receive the disability grant from SASSA.

5. Assets Proof

To determine your complete financial condition, SASSA will also ask you to provide your assets proofs. For this, SASSA conducts a means test to evaluate the applicant’s income and assets. You can provide documents that clearly show the value of your assets, such as Municipal property value, vehicles, and other valuable assets documents.

6. Proof of Private Pension

If receiving any private pension, you may asked to provide your pension proof to deeply understand your income sources. This will help them to determine your income and check eligible for the grant.

7. Bank Statements (Last 3 Months)

Your Bank Statements share a clear picture of your income and the money you are receiving. Bank Statements will help SASSA find all sources of income you currently have. So, it is important to provide your bank statement, not more than 3 months old.

With the help of statements, SASSA will get a clear picture of your current financial condition and check whether you need the grant or not.

8. Marital Status Proof

Your marital status is also important for SASSA, so they will ask you about your marital status when applying for the Disability Support grant. You can provide the following documents during the application process:

  • Married: For the married applicant, provide your marriage certificate along with the applicant form.
  • Divorced: For divorces, you will need to provide your divorce legal order by the court.
  • Single or Never Married: No document is required as the marital status proof.

9. Employment Status Proof

Have you been unemployed recently?

Were you receiving the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF)? If yes then, must provide the UIF document which is also known as the “blue book” when filing your grant application form. This document will help SASSA confirm your Employment status.

For employed individuals, your discharge certificate from a previous employer will help to share your current employment status with the SASSA.

9. Death of Spouse (if applicable)

If you lost your Spouse in the last 5 years, and you received survivor benefits then provide a copy of the will and other related documents along with your SASSA grant application form. This is only for the married applicant whose spouse expired within the last 5 years.
