South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to all eligible South African Citizens, Asylum seekers, and Special Permit holders who need financial assistance.

SASSA SRD Grant provides financial assistance of R370 (R350 earlier) every month to all unemployed individuals, refugees and others who are struggling to support their basic expenses like food, shelter, clothing, etc.

If you are also unemployed or do not have any other earning sources to manage your expenses, then you are eligible for the SASSA SRD R350 grant. You can easily apply for the grant using any of the methods shared in this article, but before make sure to check whether you are eligible or not.

In this article, I will share the SASSA R350 Grant application process using any of the methods available, and the SASSA R350 grant eligibility criteria. So, let’s get started!

Eligibility for SASSA SRD R350 Grant Application

Before you start the SASSA SRD Grant application process, it is always recommeded to check whether you are eligible to receive the grant or not. The following are the SASSA SRD grant eligibility criteria:

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa, a permanent resident, or a refugee with a valid permit to apply for the grant.
  • Your age must be between 18 to 60 years old.
  • Your monthly income must be less than R624 per month to receive the Social Relief of Distress grant.
  • You’ll required to pass the SASSA means test for your income and assets evaluation to be eligible for this grant.
  • You must not be receiving any other social grant.
  • The applicant must lack sufficient resources to cover their basic needs.
  • Applicant should not be contributing to or receiving UIF benefits.
  • Applicants should not unreasonably refuse employment or educational opportunities.
  • Must not reside in state-funded accommodation.
  • You must possess a clean criminal record.

Documents Required for SRD R350 Grant Application Process

You must have the following information and documents to apply for the SASSA grant, so make sure you arrange everything before starting the process:

  • You need your valid South African ID Card, Asylum seeker documents, or Special permit with a passport.
  • Your proof of residence for the application, such as your utility bill (i.e. water or electricity bill) to prove you are living in South Africa
  • An active mobile number to receive OTPs and other SMS links
  • Your Bank Account information to receive your SRD grant payment. This bank should be registered in your own name

How To Apply for SASSA SRD Grant Application?

Before you begin, get all your information and documents handy such as South African ID Number, active mobile number, residential proof, and your bank account details. You will require all this information and documents to provide while filling SASSA SRD Grant application form. Once all the things are ready, follow any of the methods mentioned below to apply for SRD R350 grant.

SASSA R350 Grant Application Process via SASSA SRD Portal

  • First of all, visit the official SASSA portal via this link https://srd.sassa.gov.za/
  • On the official website, scroll down a bit and you will find two sections “South African Citizen” and “Asylum Seekers”.
  • Click on the “click here to proceed” button to proceed to the next step of the process.
  • Enter your South African ID number and mobile number, and click on the “Send SMS” button at the bottom.
  • You will receive a one-time password on the entered mobile number, enter the OTP on the website to complete the OTP verification.
  • Then, agree to the Terms and Conditions for the Declaration and Consent Document Rules.
  • On the next page, you will see a form asking you to provide your personal, contact, and bank information for the SASSA Social Relifed of Distress Grant application.
  • Provide all the information accurately, and double-check all the entered information to make sure that there are no typo mistakes and incorrect information.
  • Enter all your Bank Account information, such as Account number, account holder name, and branch code etc. Once done, click on the “Send Cash” button.
  • Tick the checkbox to Agree to Terms and Conditions, and submit your payment option.
  • Recheck everything and submit the application.

Apply for R350 SRD Grant through the SASSA Office (in person)

Apply for the SASSA Social Relief of Distress Grant through the nearest SASSA office in your locality. Make sure to bring all your supporting documents, (original as well as copy). You will required the documents along with your SRD grant application form. Following is the step-by-step process you need to follow:

  • Locate the nearest SASSA office and visit during their operating hours, bring all your documents.
  • Meet their staff and ask that you apply for the Social Relief of Distress grant. They will provide you with the application form and ask you to fill it out carefully.
  • Enter all the information correctly in the application form, such as your personal information, bank details etc.
  • Once filled in all the information, make sure to double-check everything. Ensure that there are no typo mistakes and mismatch information filled.
  • Attach all the supporting documents along with the form.
  • Once done, submit the form to SASSA Staff. You will receive a confirmation message saying that your application has been received.

Apply for SRD R350 Grant via WhatsApp

You can also apply for the SASSA grant through WhatsApp installed on your mobile phone. Following is the step-by-step process you need to follow:

  • Save SASSA WhatsApp Number 082 046 8553 in your mobile’s contact list.
  • Open your WhatsApp app, search for the SASSA WhatsApp contact and tap on that to start chatting.
  • Send “Hi” to initiate the chat with SASSA.
  • There will be an automated message with some options, select the “Apply for SRD” or anything similar.
  • Then, you will be asked to provide some personal information about you, such as name, address, age, DOB, etc.
  • After providing all the information, you will receive a reference number, OTP number, and website link for the OTP verification.
  • Click on the Link that will take you to a page for completing your OTP verification. Enter the OTP received on your mobile phone and complete your verification.
  • Provide your Surname and South African ID Number.
  • Double-check all the information to make sure that everything is correct and there is no typo error.
  • Once done, Agree to the Terms and Conditions. And Submit your grant application. You will receive a confirmation SMS that says your application has been submitted successfully.

Once your application has been submitted to the portal, you will receive an SMS confirming that SASSA has received your application. They will take some time to review all the information and documents you provided in the application. So, you need to wait, this waiting time can be anything from 30 to 90 days. Patiently wait for the SASSA’s response, you will receive an SMS notification when SASSA has any update to share with you.
