South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Child Grant provides financial support to all eligible parents and caregivers of children. This grant offers R530 per month per child to support the basic expenses of children like food, clothes, study etc.

All eligible caregivers will receive this grant until their children reach 18 years old. So, all the parents and caregivers who are facing financial hardship can apply for this grant and get financial support from the Government of South Africa. There are some eligibility criteria that you need to pass to be eligible for this grant.

Who Qualifies for SASSA Child Support Grant?

All the parents and caregivers who are struggling financially and not able to support the basic needs of their children can apply for this grant to receive R530 per month of financial help from SASSA. Following is the complete SASSA Child Grant Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be a South African Citizen, Asylum seeker or special permit holder.
  • You must be the primary caregiver of a child under 18.
  • The Applicant must need to pass the SASSA Means Test, which will evaluate income and assets
  • You must be earning less than R52,800 per year (approximately R4,400 per month) for individuals, and for married couples, your combined income must be less than R105,600 per year (approximately R8,800 per month combined).
  • You can apply for a maximum of six children who are not your biological or legally adopted children.
  • You are not being paid to care for the child (i.e. foster child).
  • You must not be receiving any other social grant.

This is the eligibility criteria for the Child Grant offered by SASSA, you must not be receiving any other social grant already, otherwise, you will be rejected for the Child support grant. Furthermore, you are also required to pass the Means Test for your income and asset evaluation, and if it is found that you have sufficient income and assets to provide care to your child. Your grant will be rejected.

Documents Required for Child Support Grant

Following are the documents you need for the SASSA Child Grant Application process, make sure you arrange all the documents when applying for the grant:

  • Your 13-digit barcoded South African ID Card for identity verification
  • Your child’s birth certificate with ID Number
  • Your proof of income that shows you are not earning sufficient to provide care to your children, such as your bank statement, salary slip, pension slips etc.
  • Proof that shows you are the primary caregiver or parent of children
  • Unemployment Insurance Fund for unemployed applicants, or provide your discharge certificate from a previous employer
  • If you are not the primary parent or caregiver, then provide a written permission letter from the child’s parents/guardian or proof of attempts to get maintenance from biological parents

How Much Is SASSA Child Grant Amount?

All the eligible Child Grant beneficiaries receive R530 per month per child, this amount is a big support to all the financially struggling parents and caregivers of children. This financial aid will help you to support all the basic needs of your children, such as food, shelter, clothing, and study until he/she reaches 18.

This amount will be credited to your selected payment method on the announced date every month, you will receive an SMS notification when your grant is disbursed.

How To Apply for SASSA Child Grant?

Previously, SASSA was providing R500 per month but the grant amount increased to R530 per month per child. If you have checked the eligibility criteria and found that you are an eligible person for this grant, then follow the below shared step-by-step process to apply for Child Grant:

  • Locate the nearest SASSA Office for the application process, and also check for their operating hours.
  • When reach the office, meet their staff and ask them if you want to apply for the Child Grant.
  • The staff will hand you the application form and ask you to fill it out.
  • Provide all the information asked in the application form, such as personal information, residence and bank details.
  • Double-check that all the information filled in the form is correct and does not have any typo mistakes, otherwise, your application process will be delayed.
  • Now, choose a payment method that you want to select to receive your grant payment. There are multiple ways to receive your payment, such as bank transfer, post office, Sassa card, or pick-n-pay stores.
  • Once done, provide all the required documents we shared in the list above. Make sure the copies of documents are clear and readable.
  • After completing the form and attaching documents, submit the form to SASSA staff.

How to Check SASSA Child Grant Status?

Follow the step-by-step process to check your SASSA Child Support Grant status online:

  • First of all, visit the official SASSA portal via this link https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status
  • On the official website, you will be asked to enter the South African ID Number and registered mobile number.
  • After entering the details, click on the Submit button at the bottom of the form.
  • Your Child Grant status will be shown on the screen. If the status shows “Approved” then you will start receiving your grant payment from the next scheduled date. If your status is declined, then follow the steps shared in this article.

You can check your grant balance to ensure how much money you received from SASSA, use any of the following methods to check your child support grant balance:

Check Balance via USSD Codes

  • Open your mobile dial pad, type *120*69277# and make the call.
  • Enter your SA ID number and registered mobile number to check your status.
  • You will receive your balance via text message to your mobile number.

Check Child Grant Balance via SASSA Card

  • Visit the nearest ATM in your area, and don’t forget to carry your SASSA Card.
  • Enter your SASSA Card in the ATM machine and enter your SASSA PIN to proceed.
  • There will be some options on the ATM screen, choose “Check Balance” or “Balance Inquiry” to check your balance.
  • Your grant balance will be displayed on the ATM screen.
